SA vs NZ, 2nd Test, Centurion: Steyn wraps up emphatic series win (SA 2:0)
Nov 19, 2007
Dale Steyn ripped through the New Zealand batting line-up to help South Africa win the second Test within three days by an innings and 59 runs at Centurion Park.
The Proteas established a 195-run first-innings advantage earlier in the day and then skittled out the tourists for just 136 with Steyn claiming six for 49 to finish with match figures of 10 for 91 - both personal bests in Test matches. The win gives South Africa a 2-0 series victory after their 358-run triumph in Johannesburg.
The Kiwis' second innings got off to the worst possible start when opener Lou Vincent was harshly adjudged lbw playing across the line to Steyn in the first over after making four, Michael Papps was also trapped in front in Steyn's next over for one. Former skipper Stephen Fleming shared a 60-run stand with Scott Styris to help steady the ship for New Zealand before the latter got an outside edge to AB de Villiers at second slip off Jacques Kallis for 29.
Ross Taylor was then run out for eight following some smart thinking by Hashim Amla at short leg to leave the tourists 78 for four, while Fleming was out shortly after lunch - lbw to Steyn - without adding to his interval score of 54. Brendon McCullum (21) and Mark Gillespie (nought) also fell to Steyn when they edged to the slips and then skipper Daniel Vettori was caught in the covers by De Villiers off Makhaya Ntini for eight as the tourists stuttered onto 136 for eight.
With Black Caps opener Craig Cumming unable to bat after undergoing cheek and jaw surgery, the dismissal of Iain O'Brien without scoring signalled the end of the New Zealand innings in the 35th over. Earlier in the day, Gillespie marked his New Zealand Test debut with a five-wicket haul to reduce the hosts to 383 after they had resumed on 272 for three - a lead of 84.
