New Zealand vs South Africa First ODI at Durban
SA vs NZ, 1st ODI, Durban: Andre Nel secures last-ball win for South Africa
Nov 26, 2007
Andre Nel hit the final ball of the match over cover to give South Africa a dramatic two-wicket win over New Zealand in the first one-day international.
The Proteas required 11 off the final over to reach their target of 249 and the Kiwis looked in control with nine needed from the last three balls.
But Nel hit back-to-back boundaries through the covers off Mark Gillespie to draw the scores level and his chip into the off-side off their final ball brought up the single needed for victory.
Morne van Wyk was bowled by Kyle Mills before the Proteas had a run on the board.
South Africa struggled to find the gaps and Mills then dismissed Jacques Kallis with a fantastic ball that squared him up and induced a nick to Ross Taylor at slip leaving the hosts struggling on nine for two.
The Proteas recovered through Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers who took the score to 100 before Smith was controversially given out by the third umpire.
The South Africa skipper pulled a Scott Styris long-hop to deep mid-wicket where Chris Martin took a safe catch but replays proved inconclusive as to whether the New Zealander had touched the rope as he took the catch. The third umpire gave Martin the benefit of the doubt and Smith was gone for 44.
South Africa looked to be cruising to victory until Daniel Vettori took a tremendous catch off his own bowling to remove De Villiers for 87 and make the score 172 for four.
With South Africa under pressure, needing 63 from 48 balls, Jean-Paul Duminy smashed Styris for six over mid-wicket to ease the required run-rate.
And Nel ended with figures of three for 46 from 10 overs.
SA vs NZ, 1st ODI, Durban: South Africa 249-8 (50 overs) beat New Zealand 248-6 (50 overs) by two wickets
