Australia powered by Shane Watson, gathered further momentum with a thrashing of South Africa by eight wickets in the Super Eight stage of cricket's World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. Tournament top-scorer Shane Watson continued his impressive form with both bat (70 off just 47 runs) and ball (two wickets for 29). Australia have now won both their Super Eight games while South Africa are on the brink of elimination having lost both their matches.

Pakistan beat South Africa by two wickets in a Super Eight stage match of the World Twenty20. Umar Gul cracked a stunning 17-ball 32 and Umar Akmal remained unbeaten on 43 t at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday after their top order suffered a batting collapse, chasing a modest target off 134 to win. Pakistan were 31 for three from five overs, after Hafeez and Imran Nazir provided them a brisk start. New Zealand were on top with Pakistan reeling at 76/7 in 14.3 overs before Gul executed a brilliant turnaround with his big hits.

After rain delayed the start by two and a half hours, South Africa beat hosts Sri Lanka by a convincing 32 run margin in a shortened seven-over-a-side World Twenty20 group C match. Put into bat, Skipper AB de Villiers led from the as she notched up 13 balls 30 to power South Africa to 78/4. Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene early and eventually limped to 46-5.

Zimbabwe crashed out of the event after slumping to their second defeat in the tournament as Richard Levi smashed his way to a 44-ball unbeaten 50 while Hashim Amla remained not out on 32 from 33 balls as South Africa chased down the target of 94 with 44 balls to spare. Opening their campaign in tournament, South Africa first restricted Zimbabwe to 93 for eight after inviting the opposition to bat and then piled up the runs without breaking a sweat. Both Sri Lanka and South Africa, who face each other in their last group match on Saturday, have progressed to the Super Eight stages from the pool.

Cricket SA on Thursday named its provisional squad of 30 players to take part in the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September. Jacques Kallis, last featured as a regular member of South Africa's Twenty20 squad in 2010 during the tour of the West Indies, and Graeme Smith, who was axed from a three-match Twenty20 series in New Zealand in February, were both included in the list which also includes three wicketkeepers in AB de Villiers, Morne van Wyk and Dane Vilas.

A blazing innings of 49* off 28 balls by India's Gautam Gambhir could not prevent a South African win in a rain-hit one-off Twenty20 international. India were 11 runs away from the par score of 82 in the eighth over when rain stopped play.Robin Uthappa was not out on 18 from 19 balls. Before this match, India lead the head-to-head in Twenty20s by an overwhelming 4-1, and were meeting South Africa where they played their first ever Twenty20.

Uthappa named in place of Tendulkar in T20 squad against SA

Robin Uthappa was on Wednesday named in place of Sachin Tendulkar, who no longer plays in T20 Internationals, in India's squad for the one-off Twenty20 International in Johannesburg on March 30 to commemorate the 150 years of settlement of Indians in South Africa. The match will be held at the Wanderers ground after the March 11-22 Asia Cup 2012 and precede the Indian Premier League T20 competition commencing on April 4. The match – for the New Age Cup – is set to become an annual fixture. The match will also pay tribute to South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis.
